    Document Traceability

This solution allows the document printing company to trace each individual document from the moment it gets an inkjet printed bar code on it until it goes onto a pallet.  So, if you know the pallet serial number bar code, you can find all the documents that go with that pallet.

    How does it work?

It all starts at the Inkjet printing machine. The Supervisor uses our operator PC/SQL interface to create a job. He enters everything from how many documents go into a shrink wrapped bundle to how many shrink wrapped bundles go into a carton and how many cartons go onto a pallet.  After entering the starting serial number, he’s ready to run.

    Hardware used:

Microscan MS 820 Microscan MS 860 Zebra Z4M

This system uses the Microscan models MS860 and MS820 bar code readers for reading fast moving bar codes. For printing we use the Zebra model Z4m table top printers. For the print apply machine we use the Label Mill model 3501 equipped with a Zebra PAX print engine. For rework of damaged bundles, we use Symbol cordless hand scanners.

    Traceability:

While the inkjet is printing, the bar codes are being read; data validated, and logged in the database.  In other parts of the facility, documents are being bundled, bar codes are being read, data validated, and logged again. Only now, we create a serial numbered label for the bundle which is automatically printed and applied to the bundle.  That bar code is then read, data validated, and logged. All the while, as boxes and pallets are filled more serialized labels are being printed as needed.

Throughput and compliance means more business:

With 100% traceability from the pallet to the individual document, we’re able to produce about 3,000 bundles per hour while 2 inkjet machines can be printing bar codes on the individual documents.  Because our customer was able to comply to their customer’s requirement and our system improved their efficiency, they were awarded more business and fulfilled it in the same amount time as before.
